dry 70s snare drum sound?
I'm not quite sure what kind of sound it is you're looking for, nor do I know much about drums, but have you tried maybe tightening the snare?

not possible, even if the head was the right size the marching snare heads require alot more tension it would break most drumkit snares which is why marching snares are longer, the wood and the rim are thicker
